More than a year ago, a group of students from Yale, Peking University and other universities returned to the countryside with great ambitions, trying to explore a way for youth to help rural development, and use what they have learned to serve impoverished areas.
I once read in a poem by Hiroshi Yoshino:
Life in essence
have a vital lack
it is completed by the presence of the other
However
us, each other
for this important lack of oneself
unaware and uninformed
it turns out that we are the seeds that were sown
For me, the countryside is one of thousands of "others".
We read poetry, travel far, experience more of the "good" and "better", looking out impatiently, walking incessantly lest we miss any interesting life. But the more I know, the more I know "I don't know". Life is like a gel state, everyone looks transparent and bright from the outside, with the feeling of stickiness and entanglement. With the help of the "other" of the countryside, I began to look inward. In this "other", there are some pains in the world that I have never touched and the innocence and enthusiasm that I have nowhere to spy on. After being knocked down to the ground, I am not so eager to look out.
I believe that fast is slow, and that slow is fast.
In the same way, I also believe that starting from the nearest place may allow more people to go a little farther, yet not so far away from something as far away as "full happiness", at least in the not-so-good world and ordinary life, we can see a few flashes of light. If I am lucky enough to see these shining moments with more people, at that moment, I no longer want to be anyone, maybe I can become "myself".
Maybe you already have experience in rural economic or social development, then we hope that your experience can influence more people. It may also be that you don't know much about the countryside, but you only have enthusiasm and expectations, then this summit is held for you.
We believe that knowing and perceiving the native land is the first step in serving the native land.
Whether you are a leader of young people returning to their hometowns, young rural cadres, young scholars, or college students who want to understand the countryside and serve the countryside, as long as you care about rural development, this summit is for you.
The summit invited young people from different fields to discuss "wether it is a better choice for young college students to serve the countryside in the new era".
Among them are the leaders of returned youths with high school education, youths from Harvard and Yale supporting farmers, and well-known debaters from Qipashuo.
We believe that the collision of ideas from different fields is the first step for us to understand the local area.
